How Is Hydroelectricity Generated?

We can generate hydroelectricity in many ways. However, the basic principle remains the same. The water passes through a turbine. As a result, the energy of the moving water rotates the turbine. The turbine rotates the shaft connected to a generator. This movement of the generator shaft generates power.

Types Of Hydroelectricity Generation Methods

Now that we know the basic principle of hydropower generation. Let’s get into the various ways of hydropower generation.

Conventional Hydroelectricity Generation

In this, we use dams to channel water onto the turbines. The turbine rotates the generator shaft thus generating power. Basically, we use the potential energy of water to generate power. Various factors affecting the power generation are as follows:

  • The volume of the reservoir.
  • the height from which the water is falling, etc.

Pumped Storage Hydroelectricity Generation

In this, we generate power by moving water between various reservoirs. We use this method to adjust the power output according to demand.

During low demand, we use excess power to pump water into the higher reservoir. During high demand, we move water between reservoirs generating power along the way.

We can adjust the output according to the demand very quickly. Therefore, this is a flexible way of hydropower generation.

Run-Of-The-River Hydroelectricity Generation

In this method, we don’t need reservoirs and large dams. In this, we use the motion of running stream to generate power. This kind of powerplant cannot generate power on demand. Moreover, the power output is pretty low.

Tidal Hydroelectricity Generation

In this, we use tides to generate power. During high tide, we open the gates of the reservoir. This allows water to move towards the reservoir through the turbine. In this way, we generate power during high tide. During low tide, we allow the water in the reservoir to fall through a turbine, again generating electricity.

Conclusion

Hydropower is a really great source of affordable renewable energy. After all the cost of setting up the power plant, the cost of power generation is very low. In fact, it is one of the most affordable sources of power.
