Biomass energy refers to the energy that comes from living beings. The usage of this fuel alternative has been in practice since the caveman. They used wood for cooking and heat. It is an organic energy source. Animals and plants contribute to biomass. Biomass is also a better option for all the already over other energy sources. Biomass comes from the sun. Plants convert carbon dioxide into oxygen by using power from the sun. From animals, it is used in indirect ways like for biofuel, electricity, etc..

 Biomass Energy With Biofuels

Ethanol and biodiesel are the only fuels that can get converted to liquid form biofuels. They power vehicles in countries like Sweden, U.S.A, and Austria. Fermenting biomass that is high in carbohydrates like corn, wheat, or sugar cane, gives ethanol. Biodiesel comes from combining this ethanol with vegetable oil or animal fat. But biofuels do not work efficiently as gasoline. They, when blended, cancel out the number of emissions of fossil fuels. One acre of corn produces almost 400 gallons of ethanol. But this land will be unfit for other crops due to high pesticides compared to other crops. Instead of wood, in residential areas, ethanol works best. It looks like flames and only gives out water vapor.

Process

Biomass energy is created with different procedures. They are gasification, anaerobic decomposition, pyrolysis, direct, and co-firing. In direct firing, the steam produced on moisture repellent, dried biomass material can turn the turbine. This, in turn, can be used to produce electricity. It can also use co-firing or burning with fossil fuel. This method eliminates the need for new factories. It shows a so much reduction in the greenhouse gas emission level.

Pyrolysis creates chemically altered biomass. It, when heated to 200-300 degrees without oxygen gives the product. This method gives out a black gas called Pyrolysis oil or syngas. Solid sediment called biochar also gets formed in this process. It is similar to charcoal. Syngas is more like natural gas. Therefore, these are an excellent way of reducing emissions into the atmosphere. 

Biomass Energy For Hydrogen Fuel Cells

Hydrogen present in the biomass needs some chemical extracting technique to generate electricity. In spacecraft and wild areas, stationary fuel cells supply enough power. Also, hydrogen fuel cells are a good alternative for cars too. Biomass energy of 40 million tons of generated hydrogen is a huge number. This energy can power up to 150 million vehicles. So, they always used in boats and buses. It has still been on a debate that the energy requirement for the process is not worth it. Because it needs to isolate, reduce, pack, and transport hydrogen is not worth the effort.

There is a steady supply of crops and trees because these are vital for the welfare and growth of human beings. So, let the carbon cycle complete, and nature gives back what it gave sometimes.
