Biomass energy is the energy derives from organic matter. It is used directly or indirectly or uses in the form of biofuel. The process begins with photosynthesis, and this is the primary source of feed to the plants.

Photosynthesis is the process in which solar energy get convert into chemical energy. Later this becomes the primary power resource for the internal processes. Society today is very much dependent on the chemical energy that produces electrical energy.

Similarly, fossil fuels are derived from biological matter, and while burning, they also release energy. It, however, take millions of years for fossil fuels to be produced. On the contrary, the energy stored is released by biomass throughout its lifespan. However, the amount is exponentially shorter than needed for the production of fossil fuels.

The type of biomass used largely determines the process of deriving energy from organic matter. Mentioned below are the main types:-

  • Natural – Biomass energy production in a natural process and there is no human intervention.
  • Residual – From biological remains, energy derives from farming and industries of various types. Some examples of forestry industries are sawdust and wood pellets, from farming industries, are olive pits, almond shells, sawdust, cereal straw or corn stover.
  • Resulting from Energy Crops – In industry, certain types of crops grow and the use of them is to obtain energy. The production process is different and this depends on the specific biomass material use to receive energy. Wood includes all forms of timber, namely sawdust, logs, wood chips, wood pallets, and tree bark. All these uses to produce energy. Mentioned below are the processes of obtaining power from wood:

Wood Combustion

Wood combustion is the best way of converting wood into electricity. In whatever form the wood is available is burn and heat produced. Hence, the heat increases the water temperature inside the tank or water boiler and releases steam. The steam gives power to the turbine, and further, this power goes to the generator to produce electricity. In forestry industries, wood combustion used so that part of the energy received for the factory only. By installing a piping system, water heaters provide heat to the buildings.


Cogeneration also knew as combined heat and power (CHP) is a continuous process of production of heat and electricity. High investment needs in the system as it produces more energy than wood combustion. Hence, less wood used to provide more power and heat. Sometimes the system oversizes, and this results in a higher cost than higher efficiency.

Wood Gasification

In a chamber with low oxygen, wood heats to give high temperature during the process of wood gasification. Thus, wood releases carbon monoxide and hydrogen, and mix with oxygen and boiler heats to distribute the energy.
